Groke uses aluminum to build their modern entry doors. Why Aluminum? Because it is so much more than just cans and foil. Today aluminum is one of the most popular materials in use. Aluminum’s unique properties are the key to its versatility.
Aluminum is the most common metal found in the earth’s crust (approximately 8%) and is the third most plentiful element known to mankind. Only oxygen and silicon (sand) exist in greater quantities. It wasn’t until 1808 that British electrochemist Sir Humphrey Davy established the existence of aluminum and not until Danish scientist Hans Christian Oersted produced the first tiny pellet of the metal 17 years later. It took many years of experimentation before a process was developed for aluminum production. The first production companies were not established until 1888 (one each in the US, France, and Switzerland). Through the early 1900s with this new process the price of aluminum continued to reduce as the demand continued to rise.
By the end of World War II the stage was set for aluminum to become the most widely used non-ferrous metal in the world.

You hear the terms U-Factor and R-Value a lot but do you really know what it means? Both are measures of energy performance but are reached in very different ways. Most of us know that the higher the R-Value the better the insulation and therefore the better the energy savings for our homes. We also understand that if the R-Value is high then the U-Value or U-Factor is low. In order to understand how these ratings can help us make wish decisions about investing in energy savings we must clearly understand what the ratings mean.
R-Value is a measure of resistance to heat flow. Generally, R-Value is given for a certain thickness of specific material, such as fiberglass wall insulation. The R-Value of a structure can be estimated by simply adding up the R-Value of each material that makes up the layers in the wall (exterior sheathing, insulation, interior drywall, etc.). One of the many wonderful things about Groke custom aluminum doors is the fact that they are all truly custom made for your home or building application so your door is the perfect fit and specification. Many of our customers love the fact that we can build very wide entry doors… up to 45.5 inches wide usable opening width for single doors(51 inches wide to the outside edges of the jamb). Depending on architectural constraints, having the ability to specify your rough opening width is a great opportunity to go wide! There are many benefits to having a wide door such as increased accessibility for wheelchairs or baby strollers, greater convenience when moving furniture in or out, or simply to make an impressive visual or aesthetic impression. Having a wide, beautiful custom door is easy with Groke! “Custom” is a word you will hear a lot when looking for doors and the term can mean a few different things. In reality, there are different levels of customization available from different manufacturers, and some doors are certainly more custom than others. Often times, the need for a custom door is driven by the fact that the application requires an unusual size.
Let’s explore the sizing issue a little deeper. Thank you for joining us in the great city of New Orleans for Greenbuild.
